March Spotlight 2025

Zach & Ross

March Spotlight 2025

This month’s student-mentor spotlight is mentor Ross Powell and his mentee, Zach Sawyer, from Fernandina Beach  High School. The two have been matched since May 2021.

ROSS POWELL, Mentor

What do you consider to be your hometown? How long have you lived in Fernandina Beach?

My hometown is tough to identify. I was born in the small town of Metuchen, NJ. (Suburban NYC). My dad moved our family 7 times before I graduated from high school. Then, my wife Bonnie and I have moved 8 times in our 40 years together before retiring to Fernandina Beach over 8 years ago.

What made you decide to mentor with Take Stock?

I owe it entirely to Robin Lentz. Robin was our guest speaker at the Kiwanis Club of Fernandina Beach 5 years ago. Her presentation was so compelling and impressive that she left me convinced to become a mentor.

How many students have you mentored?
I have only had the pleasure of mentoring one, Zachary Sawyer.

What have you gained from mentoring Zach?

Simply put, I’ve gained a great deal of respect for both Zachary personally and for his educational growth experience at Fernandina Beach High School. He has matured tremendously in these 5 years. His self confidence, his determination to succeed, and his comfort level in public speaking have been remarkable.

ZACH SAWYER, Fernandina Beach High School

Why did you want to apply for Take Stock?

In 8th grade, I didn’t know what I wanted to do after high school. When I found out about Take Stock, I felt that it would help me find my interests and follow them.

What have you learned from your relationship with your mentor, Ross?

Ross has taught me the number of opportunities that are available that many don’t take advantage of. By simply using my resources and being proactive, I can put myself on the right track.

What is your favorite memory from TSIC?

Years ago, Take Stock had an event where we went to Island Falls and played mini golf with our mentors. I had a lot of fun with Ross that day and learned a lot about him.

What are your plans after you graduate high school and TSIC?
I plan on going to college and going into Air Force ROTC. I would like to be a pilot in the Air Force.
