January Spotlight 2024

January Spotlight 2024

This January, the student-mentor spotlight is on mentor Kim Harrison and her mentee, Ashlyn Daughtry.

Kim Harrison, Mentor

What do you consider to be your hometown? How long have you lived in Fernandina Beach?
I am from Callahan and graduated from West Nassau High School in 1993, so it is nostalgic to mentor students who are walking the same halls that I did many years ago. After attending college at the University of Florida, I moved to Jacksonville for a few years and then ended up moving right back to Callahan. Living in a small town is the best!

What made you decide to mentor with Take Stock?
My mom, Beth Reynolds, was a long-time mentor. I watched her enjoy her time as a mentor and so many deserving students get the chance to attend college with the help of Take Stock. As an educator, I enjoy spending time with students and watching them mature and grow. Take Stock gives me the chance to give back to the students in my community.

How many students have you mentored?
I have mentored three students through Take Stock. Each student has a special place in my heart, and I am so proud of each one. I love to see the students I have mentored all grown up, attending college, following their journey, and making college dreams their reality.

What have you gained from mentoring Ashlyn?
Ashlyn was very quiet and reserved when we first met. Over the years we have developed a special bond and friendship. She is so confident now, and I really enjoy hearing about and seeing all the activities she participates in at school. Her participation in CNA has really helped her decide on a career in nursing. Ashlyn is smart, witty, and making great plans for her future. She is a great listener and friend to her peers. Ashlyn makes me want to be a better friend! I am so proud of Ashlyn and can’t wait to see where her journey takes her!

Ashlyn Daughtry, West Nassau High School Senior

Why did you want to apply for Take Stock?
I applied for Take Stock because my family and I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to reach my goals.

What have you learned from your relationship with your mentor, Mrs. Harrison?
Mrs. Harrison has taught me so much. She’s spent many days helping me with homework, giving me important advice, and helping me break out of my shell. I have learned so much from her, and I’m very grateful for her.

What is your favorite memory from TSIC?
The meetings with Mrs. Harrison because she has always listened and allowed me to express any troubles I have or concerns about college. I also appreciate Coach Green for his patience and how thorough he is with the college tracker.

What are your plans after you graduate high school and TSIC?
I plan on moving out and going to FSCJ in the fall and start my college career.
