08 Jan December Spotlight 2024
This month’s student-mentor spotlight is mentor Gina Weaver, and her mentee, Alana Freeman. The two have been matched since March 2021.
GINA WEAVER, Mentor
What do you consider to be your hometown? How long have you lived in Fernandina Beach?
I’m from eastern North Carolina, but Fernandina Beach is home. I have lived in Nassau County for 10 years.
What made you decide to mentor with Take Stock?
A former mentor, Rita Tiensch, recommended the program to me.
How many students have you mentored?
Two.
What have you gained from mentoring Jenny?
It has truly been an honor and a pleasure to witness Alana’s continued growth, both academically and personally. She has not only excelled as a student, but has also developed into a confident and inspiring leader. Her remarkable work ethic, along with her ability to navigate a demanding schedule while maintaining meaningful relationships, has been a joy to observe. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for her! As Alana’s mentor, I certainly have a deeper appreciation for the time, dedication, determination, and hard work required to gain acceptance to college for today’s students.

Why did you want to apply for Take Stock?
Originally, I had no clue what TSIC was until my grandmother signed me up and told me I was going to do it. Now that I’ve gone through the program, sticking with TSIC was the best decision ever!
What have you learned from your relationship with your mentor, Gina?
I have learned to always be myself and to see the best in people no matter what. I have also learned that when one door closes God will always open another full of opportunities!
What is your favorite memory from TSIC?
My favorite memory from TSIC is going to FSU and getting to tour the campus. It was so much fun!
What are your plans after you graduate high school and TSIC?
I plan to attend FSU to study business and interior design.
