22 Apr April Spotlight 2026
This month’s student-mentor spotlight is mentor Alisha Brown and her mentee, Passion Roberts, from Fernandina Beach High School. The two have been matched since Passion started the program in 2023.
ALISHA BROWN, Mentor
What do you consider to be your hometown?
Fernandina Beach is my hometown; I was born and raised here.
What made you decide to mentor with Take Stock?
It was Robin Lentz. When she asked me the first time, I declined because I didn’t think I had the time. A year later TSIC had a tent at the Juneteenth event and I signed up. Best decision and my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.
How many students have you mentored?
One; Passion is my first student.
What have you gained from mentoring Passion?
I have gained hope and perspective. Passion is compassionate and driven. She is faced with challenges, but she does not view them as challenges, she views them as the next thing on the list. Together we worked through the “what do I want to be when I grow up.” She figured it out and it inspired me to work on my next chapter as well. So, add inspiration to the list.
PASSION ROBERTS, FERNANDINA BEACH HIGHT SCHOOL
Why did you want to apply for Take Stock?
I wanted to apply to Take Stock because I was looking for guidance, support, and opportunities to help me reach my full potential. I understand that navigating school isn’t always easy, and I knew the program would guide me through that process. Having a mentor also meant I would have someone to keep me focused on my goals and prepare me for college.
What have you learned from your relationship with your mentor, Alisha?
Through my relationship with my mentor, Alisha, I’ve learned the importance of staying positive and making the best out of every situation. She has helped me develop a solution-oriented mindset and always reminds me to focus on what truly makes me happy. Her support and encouragement have inspired me and made a significant impact on my life. She is someone I will never forget, along with the many lessons she has taught me.
What is your favorite memory from TSIC?
My favorite memory from Take Stock was attending the graduation ceremony during my first year in the program. At the time, I remember looking up to the seniors and imagining what it would feel like to be in their position. Now that it’s my turn, it feels very nostalgic and reminds me of how fast time passes and to make every moment count.
What are your plans after you graduate high school and TSIC?
After graduating from high school and Take Stock, I plan to attend the University of Miami, majoring in political science. My goal is to become an attorney, and eventually a judge. My biggest goal is to one day be able to give back to programs like Take Stock that have played such an important role in my journey.
