14 Nov November Spotlight 2025
This month’s student-mentor spotlight is mentor Mike Hagy and his mentee, Savion Roberts, from Fernandina Beach High School. They have been matched since June 2023.
MIKE HAGY, Mentor
What do you consider to be your hometown? How long have you lived in Fernandina Beach?
I was born and raised in Grundy, VA (middle of the Appalachian mountains).
What made you decide to mentor with Take Stock?
I was introduced to TSIC by another mentor Gena Weaver. After researching the program and talking to Robin Lentz, I decided that maybe I could make a difference. I have often wondered how my life and difficulties in high school would have eased if I had the option of a mentor.
How many students have you mentored?
Savion (a senior) is my first student, and we were matched in his 10th grade year. I currently have a second student in the 8th grade at Hilliard.
What have you gained from mentoring Savion?
Joy is what I have gained from knowing Savion. I often tell others that I have learned more from Savion that he has from me. The main thing is that he keeps me in the here and now. As one ages, the future is short and the past is long. Neither is a good place to dwell. As I watch him actively find his way in today’s world, I hope that there is something I said or did that will make his travels lighter.
SAVION ROBERTS, Fernandina Beach High School
Why did you want to apply for Take Stock?
I wanted to apply to Take Stock so that I can have an opportunity to know for a fact that I’m going to college, and to help my mom not stress about having to pay for me to attend.
What have you learned from your relationship with your mentor, Mike?
What I’ve learned from my mentor is that patience, but also getting everything done as soon as possible, is key to making sure that you have things done correctly and that you’re successful. I also learned that if you don’t put in the work and try to get help, you’re just going to be stuck in the same place and that it’s ok to reach out for help.
What is your favorite memory from TSIC?
My favorite memory from TSIC was attending a college tour at UF and taking a look at what it would be like to attend that college.
What are your plans after you graduate high school and TSIC?
After high school, I plan on attending college so that I can become a nursing student and eventually a travel wound care nurse.
