September Spotlight 2025

Emma & Vicki

September Spotlight 2025

This month’s student-mentor spotlight is mentor Vicki Arpin and her mentee, Emma Jones, from Hilliard Middle-Senior High School.

VICKI ARPIN, Mentor

What do you consider to be your hometown? How long have you lived in Fernandina Beach?

Hamden, CT. I lived here 6 years.

What made you decide to mentor with Take Stock?

I am a big supporter of education and supporting students so that they can reach their goals. I think programs and opportunities to help raise people up and bring them along are invaluable.

How many students have you mentored?

Emma is my first student.

What have you gained from mentoring Charity?

Emma was very quiet when we first met and it was hard for her to open up in our early conversations. It has been amazing to watch her blossom and grow into her own strength. It is an honor that Emma has graciously allowed me into her life and shared her hopes and plans.  Emma has also shared her joy in art and I am in awe of people who have such a creative skill. She has challenged me to be a better person, see the world through different lenses, and to have patience to let some things evolve. We have talked through some tough topics, especially as she prepares for her senior year. I am so proud of her and can’t wait to see her future unfold.

EMMA JONES, Hilliard Middle-Senior High School

Why did you want to apply for Take Stock?

I applied to Take Stock because of the opportunities it offers. I hoped to learn from my mentor, while using the Take Stock program to help plan my future.

What have you learned from your relationship with your mentor, Vicki?

I have learned a lot from Vicki. To me the most important item was time management. She has also helped me be more confident in my abilities and strengths.

What is your favorite memory from TSIC?

My favorite memory in Take Stock would be meeting other students in the program. The kickoffs are a great way to reach out to other students and never failed to be pleasant to attend.

What are your plans after you graduate high school and TSIC?

My plan for after graduation is to work while being a part time student. Because I haven’t had the opportunity to work and gain experience in that way I hope to take my prerequisite classes while learning outside experience during my first year.
